The Syrian Monologues in Sri Lanka

On the occasion of World Refugee Day on 20th June 2016, 10 countries performed “The Syrian Monologues” in support and solidarity with the Syrian refugee crisis.

Initiated by Iman Aoun of Ashtar for Theatre Productions and Training (the creator of the Gaza Monologues, 2010), the Syrian Monologues were performed in Palestine, UK, Brazil, France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, Greece and Sri Lanka, featuring true stories of Syrian refugees around the world about their fleeing saga. In September 2015, ASHTAR Theatre worked with 120 Syrian refugees in Amman. The refugees came to Jordan from Dara’a, Hums, and the suburbs of Damascus, and the monologues are the result of a writing workshop given to 20 of the participants by Iman Aoun.

Stages Theatre Group in collaboration with Mind Adventures Theatre Company, Sri Lanka, Performed 4 monologues – one each in English and Tamil and two in Sinhalese, directed by Jayampathi Guruge and Arun Welandawe-Prematilleke – sponsored by the Goethe Institut Sri Lanka.
