Colombo – Sri Lanka
INTRO TO PLAY
Grease Yaka is a play about fear.
It was conceived, driven and devised entirely by young people, and is based on material developed by students and young alumni of Ananda College together with guest actors at workshops held from February 2014 onwards under the guidance of Ruwanthie and two other artists from the Stages Theatre Group.
Emerging from the issues, themes and stories that most intrigued and impassioned the cast, Grease Yaka charts the evolution of fears in our society and examines their impact on our collective psyche.
Using the ‘grease yaka’ phenomenon as a tool and a metaphor, the play provides insight into individual and collective fears and explores how these develop into widespread social phobias, and what results from them.
Running time – 70 mins (no interval)
Language – English and Sinhala
‘Audacious, timely and potent, seething with energy and biting satire. Exceptional work!’ Tracy Holsinger, Mind Adventures Theatre Co.
‘It was a night of suspense, theatrics, mystery, but mostly… fear… This is one play that the public was not gonna forget any time soon.’ Asuka Randeniya, Daily News
‘The production was inquisitive to a fault, probing hidden agendas and vested interests with a vengeance.’ W.O.R.D’Smythe, Daily FT
‘Overall, ‘Grease Yaka’ was bold and subtle, satirized and layered, raucous and stimulating, provoking boisterous laughter and disturbing thoughts, the combination of which is very rare and very, very entertaining.’ Marissa van Eyck, Daily Mirror
‘An innovative endeavour which contributes much to contemporary Sri Lankan theatre.’ Dilshan Boange, Sunday Observer
