Workshop Facilitation Training

Workshop Facilitation Training
for Artists

A two-day training session, to further develop the skills of our artists who conduct workshops for children around the country, was held during the 17th and 18th of June, 2023 at the Nuga Sevana Open Air Theatre.

The session was conducted by Ruwanthie, Lihan, Malith, Shazna, and Henry de Mel, and the areas covered were related to preparing for the upcoming regional festivals – effectively working with the children, proposal writing, budgeting, and how to produce a festival. There was also time set aside to do yoga (led by Ruwanthie) and play games – activities that were as important as the rest.

This is because the sort of theatre that STG creates and teaches is very physical, requiring the actors to be energetic, strong, flexible and in tune with their minds, bodies and spirits, and practising yoga enables our artists to achieve this. It is necessary for the artists to learn to play new games so that they can go back to their respective workshops and play these games with the children – in addition to being something that the children will enjoy learning and partaking in, games help to cultivate mindfulness and introduce them to vital drama techniques (such as how to work in a group, how to communicate and receive verbal and non-verbal cues, how to improvise etc).
